Carla Shaw

Carla McGuire Shaw of Whiteville passed away on February 15, 2025. She was born to the late Vernon McGuire and Melba Linkous McGuire.

She is survived by her sons, Derek Shaw and Alexander Shaw.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Shaw.

Margaret Sikes

Margaret Ellen Stanley Sikes, 81, of Whiteville passed away, Thursday, February 13, 2025 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Angel House. She was born August 07,1943 in Horry County, S.C. to the late Robert C. Stanley and Carrie B. Price Stanley.

She is survived by a son, Barry Sikes (Kim) of Piedmont, S.C.; a daughter, Melinda Powell (Greg) of Whiteville, N.C.; grandchildren, Mark Sikes, Christopher Powell, Eli Powell, Ashly Graham (Correy), Meagan Sikes; great-granddaugther, Sadie Graham.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Eddie Sikes and Scott Sikes; great- granddaugther, Kaydance Sikes; brother, Jerry Stanley and her former spouse, Charles E. Sikes.

Family was the highlight of her life, but her greatest love was Jesus. She focused her life as a servant of Christ. She had always been an active church member. White Marsh Baptist Church is where she attended for 35+ years. She then transferred her membership to Pleasant Plains Baptist Church for 30+ years. Early on, she served as a Sunday School teacher followed by years of participating on multiple church committees. Recently, she served on the search committee for nearly 2 years at PPBC as well as the flower committee. She loved her Adult Ladies Sunday School class.

Socializing was fun and exciting for her. She was a member of “The Red Hats.” She also enjoyed eating breakfast with her very close friends. Her hobbies included attending various church functions, shopping, flower and vegetable gardening as well as traveling to the beach and mountains. She loved playing bingo and eating with her special friends.

Services will be held Thursday, February 20, 2025 at 2:00pm at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church with Dr. David B. Heller and Rev. Joshua Conner oaiciating. Burial will follow in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park.

Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Cheryl Diane Malpass

Cheryl Diane Malpass, 61, of Delco passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2025 while at work. She was born October 8, 1963 the perfect first year anniversary gift for Joyce Little Malpass  and Benny Earl Malpass.

She is survived by her loving family; mother, Joyce Little Malpass;  son, Christopher Beck;  daughter, Nikki Beck and husband, La Juane Latham; grandchildren, Niaune Latham, Dee Dee Latham and DebraJai Latham; step grandson, Zyvion Latham. As well as, her brothers and sisters, Kenneth Malpass and wife,Teresa, Dr. Gloria Malpass, Gregory Malpass and wife, Christy, Sabrina Griffin and husband, Michael;  also many nieces and nephews that she thought the world of,  as well as some very special friends.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her father, Benny Earl Malpass.

Cheryl earned a Bachelors Degree from UNCW.  She worked at International Paper of Riegelwood for 37 years.  She was a member of Red Hill Pentecostal Church.

Her visitation will be held Monday, February 17, 2025 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.

Her funeral service will be at 2:00 pm at Red Hill Pentecostal Church , 1383 Byrdville – Freeman Road, Delco, NC 28436.

Burial will follow at the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery , 1013 James B. White Hwy. N., Whiteville, NC 28472.

Betty Etheridge

Betty Miller Etheridge of Whiteville, passed away February 11, 2025. 

She is survived by her sons, Allen Etheridge (Christy Silver), Jonathon (Angela Davis); grandchildren, Cody, Cameron, Becca, Blake, Kiara, Jadan “BopBop”, Abby, Chris, Emily; great-grandchildren, Paisley, Violet, Michael, Ruthie.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph “Coot” Etheridge.

Terry Hazel, 54, of 1606 South J. K. Powell Boulevard, Whiteville, NC, died Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Columbus Regional Healthcare System.

The funeral will be 1:00 PM Saturday, February 22, at Brunswick-Waccamaw Headquarters, 600 Pinelog Road, Whiteville, NC.  Burial will be in the Hallsboro Memorial Park.

Viewing will be at Peoples Funeral Chapel Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM and at the Headquarters Saturday 30 minutes prior to and following the service.

Christine Verlyn Nance Frink, 93, of Chadbourn, NC, died Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at Liberty Commons.

The funeral will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 19, at Peoples Funeral Chapel.  Burial will be in the Belvue Cemetery.

Viewing will be at the chapel one hour prior to the service.

Charles Dale “Blue” McNeil, 71, of 134 New Hope Street, Whiteville, NC, died Monday, February 10, 2025, at home.

The funeral will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 18, at Brunswick-Waccamaw Baptist Headquarters, 600 Pinelog Road, Whiteville, NC.  Burial will be in the Campground Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Peoples Funeral Chapel Monday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM and at the Brunswick-Waccamaw Tuesday following the service.

Lottie Mae (Kemp) Stanley

Lottie Mae Kemp Stanley, 78, of 4077 Union Valley Road, Whiteville, NC, died Sunday, February 9, 2025, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.

The funeral will be 1:00 PM Saturday, February 15, at Central Baptist Church, 443 West Virgil Street, Whiteville, NC, by Pastor David Flowers.  Cremation will follow.

Viewing will be at the church Saturday 30 minutes prior to the service.

Surviving are her husband, Ben A. Stanley, Jr.; daughters, Barbara C. Campbell of Whiteville, Leann Stanley of Tabor City, NC, and Thomasina Diggs of Hawthorne, GA; sons, William Timothy Capers, Jr. of Williamsburg, VA and Jonathan Stanley of Fayetteville, NC; sisters, Dora Jean Jackson of Whiteville, Peggie Elizabeth Cutler of Havelock, NC, and Samala Smith of Wilmington, NC; and stepson, Julius Stanley of Whiteville.

Margaret Jane Rickman

Margaret Jane Armstrong Rickman, age 82, of Whiteville, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at Columbus Regional Health Care.  Margaret was born on March 25, 1942 in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Wilbur Hilderbrand and Margaret Costello Hilderbrand.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters; Ruth Hilderbrand and Mary Stevens.

Margaret worked as manager of the NeuroDiagnostic Department at the Riverside Methodist Hospital for 36 years.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband; Charles William Rickman of the home, two daughters; Margie McClure of Cardington, Ohio and Laurie Henning of Columbus, Ohio, one son; Robert William Rickman of Dublin, Ohio, 6 Grandchildren and several Great Grandchildren.

No services are scheduled at this time.

James Baldwin

Mr. James Baldwin 61, affectionally known as “Swag” of Whiteville, NC gave the Lord his hand and entered into eternal rest on Wednesday  February 12, 2025, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, NC.  He was the son of the late Mr. Earnest Lee Baldwin, Sr. and Mrs. Ressie Jones Baldwin. 

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 2:00 pm from Love Grove Freewill Baptist Church, Whiteville, NC with the Dr. Ronald Brown eulogizing. Burial will follow in Welches Creek Cemetery. 

Mr. Baldwin is survived by three sisters; Arlene Baldwin Mallory, Doretha Baldwin Burney, and Cynthia Baldwin Shipman, one brother; Earnest Lee Baldwin, Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. 

A viewing will be held on Friday, February 21, 2025, from 12 to 2 pm in the Smith Funeral Home Chapel and again on Saturday one hour prior to services at the church.

Harriet Williams

Ms. Harriet Williams 81, of Whiteville, NC formerly of Latta, SC gave the Lord her hand and entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at her residence. 

A Celebration of Life Service for Ms. Williams will be conducted on Monday, February 17, 2025, at 1:00 pm at Central Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Rev. David Flowers, Sr. eulogizing. 

Ms. Williams is survived by two sons: David Legette and Gary Williams, one daughter: Virginia Williams, one sister: Mrs. Lee Billings, a host of grandchildren, a special niece; Peggy Gore, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. 

A viewing will be held one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Deacon Robert D. Edwards

Deacon Robert D. Edwards 93, of Chadbourn, NC formerly of Whiteville, NC gave his hand to the Lord and entered eternal rest on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at Columbus Regional Healthcare System, Whiteville, NC. He was the son of the late Mr. Oscar Edwards, Sr. and Mrs. Annie Lou Powell Edwards of Whiteville, NC. 

A Celebration of Life Services for Deacon Edwards will be conducted on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at 1:00 pm from Central Baptist Missionary Baptist Church with the Pastor Rev. David Flowers, Sr. eulogizing.  Burial will follow in the Campground Cemetery. 

Deacon Edwards is survived by one son: Robert Edwards, Jr., one daughter: Karen Edwards, live-in caregiver: Sharon Young and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. 

Viewing will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, from 2 to 4 pm in the Smith Funeral Home Chapel, and one hour prior to the services.

Billie Jean (Worrell) Suggs

Billie Jean Worrell Suggs, age 79, of Tabor City, NC, died Thursday, February 13, 2025 in Shoreland Health Care, Whiteville, NC.  Born November 7, 1945 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late Thomas M. Worrell and Dorothy Lucille Smith Worrell.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Edward Suggs of the home; one daughter, Tammy Jean Suggs of Tabor City, NC; and one brother, Martin Worrell (Monica) of Yorktown, VA.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 11:00 AM in the Old Zion Church, in Tabor City, NC with burial to follow in the Old Zion Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Old Zion Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Old Zion Wesleyan Church, 10144 Swamp Fox Hwy E., Tabor City, NC 28463.

Bernice (Grimsley) Ray

Bernice Grimsley Ray, age 90, of Ash, NC, died Wednesday, February 12, 2025 in Brunswick Health & Rehab, in Ash, NC.  Born September 2, 1935, she was the daughter of the late William Alton Grimsley and Lillie Fipps Grimsley.

She is survived by three daughters, Shelia Roberts of Tabor City, NC, Diane Fowler (Vernie) of Tabor City, NC, Brenda Herring (Steve) of Tabor City, NC; two sons, Davey Ray (Donna) of Tabor City, NC, Dickie Ray (Grace) of Loris, SC; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; one sister; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Grant Ray; one daughter, Judy Ray; two sons, Dailon Ray and Chris Ray; two brothers and three sisters.

A graveside service will be held Monday, February 17, 2025 at 2:00 PM in the Myrtle Green Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends following the service in the cemetery.

David “Bobby” Robert Harless


David Robert “Bobby” Harless, age 80, died Monday, February 10, 2025 in Columbus Regional Healthcare System, Whiteville, NC.  Born February 21, 1944 in Gallagher, WV, he was the son of the late Chalmer Harless and Edith Cunningham Harless. 

He was a veteran of the United States Navy and a Master Mason in Ohio.

He did many things in his life; worked on minuteman missiles, worked in the oil fields, a tugboat captain and engineer, a commercial fisherman on the outer banks, and a dirt farmer in Ohio.  He was a very hard worker and could fix anything and always provided for his family.

He is survived by his wife Ofelia G. Nawrot of the home; four children, Jean Whitehurst Connor of Chadbourn, NC, Jennifer Barrington of Louisianna, Jeri Barinsfather of Louisiana, and Johnathan Harless of West Virginia; one brother Chalmer E. Harless; grandchildren, Elizabeth Whitehurst, Luther Whitehurst, Coty Connor, Meri Willetts, Aurelia Hoy, Abagail Everhart, Amelia Harless, Travis Hinman; great grandchildren, Brinley Whitehurst, Evelyn Truman, Cayden Connor; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Sandra Harless; daughter, Joan Harless; sister, Shirley Milam; his beloved grandmother, Aurelia Rose Cunningham.

Weldon Timothy Faulk, age 52 of Tabor City, NC, died Sunday, February 9, 2025, in McLeod Seacoast in Little River, SC.

Born in Loris, SC, he was the son of James Weldon Faulk of Tabor City, NC and Elizabeth Diane Stevens of Wilmington, NC.

He is survived by his parents James Weldon Faulk and wife Vickie of Tabor City, NC and Elizabeth Diane Stevens and husband Barry of Wilmington, NC, two sons, Daylon Timothy Faulk of Tabor City, NC, and Weldon Cash Faulk of Green Sea, SC, one daughter, U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Harleigh Lana Faulk of Conway, SC, one brother, James Christopher Faulk, six sisters, Nikki Stevens Ford and husband Dakota of Elizabeth City, NC, Danielle Miller and husband Chris of West Virginia, Jamie Livingston and husband Ryan of Conway, SC, Rachel Wynn Williams of Loris, SC, Krisie Nicole Norris and husband Billy of Tabor City, NC and Amber Garvey and husband Bryce of Florida and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Mildred Davis, James C. Faulk and Mary Gore Faulk and one stepbrother, Daniel E. Cox.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 13, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the Inman Ward Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the Dulah Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the chapel.
